NOOR SPIJKERMAN (1990)

What does a posture, an object or a tingling sensation in the body reveal about being in the world?

My work explores how people relate to the world, often emerging from small observations in everyday life: bending over in the vegetable garden, a chair in my bedroom, or a tingling sensation in my fingers.

I approach the body holistically — as a bearer of physical, sensory, mental, emotional and spiritual experience — and use it both as a medium and as a tool for exploration. Sculptures, installations, photography and performative acts arise from these observations, in which body, objects and materials continuously shape one another.

The everyday often forms the point of departure; as small shifts create moments of estrangement and wonder. From there, philosophical and cultural perspectives, including Taoism, allow me to move beyond familiar ways of seeing. My work is an ongoing exploration of how we relate to the world — unfolding through experience, and gently shifting beyond fixed understandings.
